How am I not myself?

This blog serves as a therapy, stress relief, and the occasional sanity check, as we go through the long process of adopting a child. Many posts discuss the process of open adoption, my thoughts about “waiting”, and what I’m doing to prepare for parenthood. Of course, some are just rants or discussions about random crap. Enjoy!

Teething Bites! November 18, 2009

Filed under: Adoption — mdlasure @ 10:32 pm

Nicholas started teething a couple of weeks ago and it has progressed from slight discomfort to all out pain. It comes and goes; he’ll have a great morning then wake up from his nap crying, when he would usually be smiling. He’s also not sleeping through the night (as of 5 days ago), which is hard on all of us. He wakes up around 4am fussing, and needs some coaxing to settle back down. His hands are always in his mouth now, and we go through 5 bibs a day because of the drooling.

Poor little guy! I feel so bad for him. We’re doing everything we can…teething tablets on occasion, Tylenol, and Baby Orajel. He’s actually whining in his sleep right now… :-(

The amazing thing is that it feels like he’s going to get several teeth in all at once! He turns 4 months old tomorrow, so he’s early to be teething. I feel little nubs and hot spots in his mouth…more each day! I just wish I could make his pain magically disappear. I know he won’t remember it, but I will!

We were going to start cereal this week, but since he’s having such a hard time with his gums, and we’ll have company on and off for the next two weeks, I have decided to wait. I want to keep him on his schedule as much as I can until things settle down.

So, how long can I expect this to last? Will his teeth come in soon, or will this go on for the next month or more?

Leaps and Bounds! November 10, 2009

Nicholas is now 3 1/2 months old and is growing like a weed! In the last week, he has started teething, trying to roll over, and making all sorts of vowel sounds. He is also smiling with his mouth wide open and trying to laugh out loud. I love it!

Today, during tummy time, he was pushing up on his arms (new) AND he pulled his knees up and started to propel himself forward! AMAZING! Also, when held standing up, he keeps his feet flat on the floor instead of the usual up on his toes stance. This kid is going to be crawling and walking before we know it!

I am in constant awe of this little man, and thank the stars every night for bringing him to us. I feel like the luckiest person in the world! I’ll be posting more pics tonight, so check the gallery for a new album…

Blog contest… November 2, 2009

Filed under: Adoption — mdlasure @ 1:53 pm

Hi there everyone,

There is a new open adoption roundtable up:
Write about a blogger (or bloggers) who influenced your real-life open adoption, and how. It might be someone who became an offline friend who supports and challenges you. Or a writer from a different perspective who makes you uncomfortable, but gets you thinking. Maybe a blogger who doesn’t even know you are reading. Tell us about them and how they’ve affected you.

If you enjoy reading my blog, and/or have followed our progress throughout our open adoption, please mention it at the roundtable. I am already a member of the Open Adoption bloggers list (Under the Pre-Adoptive Parents section). I’m going to enter some blogs I have been reading as well. Thanks!

Teething Already! November 2, 2009

Filed under: Adoption — mdlasure @ 11:18 am

It’s official! My lil’ guy is trying to cut his first teeth already. He’s been drooling like mad for the last month with a slight fever. I kept taking him to the peds thinking it was a cold or sinus infection.  He kept telling me his lungs were clear, he doesn’t have a runny nose, and he is still playful and happy. I was stumped. I figured it was a little virus that had to work it’s way through his system. Turns out it was teething! He still has the slight fever and mega-drool thing going on, but now he is coughing on the saliva running down his throat and he has some diarrhea. TMI, I know. Also, he has little bumps in his mouth already and LOVES when I run my fingers over them. His BM told me her son got his teeth at 4 months, and Nicholas is 3 1/2 month now, so it fits. He’s become moody with this…happy and laughing one minute, grumpy the next. Poor little guy. Growing up is so much work!

He is now happy as a clam and dancing with arms and legs while on the floor, pushing up on his arms a little while on his tummy (although it is NOT his favorite thing) and he wants to be sitting up ALL THE TIME. We got him this little seat to help him sit up…like a Bumbo seat. Very cool with little toys on it. He likes it and looks so grown up while sitting in it! He’s also chattering a lot, and loves to “sing” while I’m singing to him…it’s adorable. He’s started taking 2 1/2 hour afternoon naps already, and still sleeping through the night. He’s amazing! I am in awe of him all the time.

In other news, we celebrated Halloween by going to a friend’s 1st bday party, and handing out candy to the neighborhood kids. Here are some pics!

3 months old! October 20, 2009

Filed under: Adoption — mdlasure @ 11:44 am

I can’t believe our little Nicholas is three months old already. It really does go by so fast! Nicholas is still sleeping through the night, and is up to 4 oz per feeding. The reflux seems to be better as well. Yay! He’s chatting back and forth with me, and loves to look at books. He’s not much of a napper…usually about 1/2 hour or 45 minute naps a couple of times a day. That’s it. I guess that’s why he sleeps so well at night. Works for me!

He’s had a cold for about two weeks now. Just a head cold…post-nasal drip, stuffy nose, but his lungs are clear and he doesn’t have a cough or fever. The change in the weather seems to have contributed. It just keeps hanging on though. All I can do is vaporizer, Vicks, etc. How long is it before they can have allergies?

As for me, I’m feeling behind the 8-ball a bit, but David is a huge help. He is still not so confident with an infant, but he is doing lots around the house to help out. Once Nicholas is able to sit up and interact more, David will be a natural. It will be nice to have him interact better with others and get a bit more social; the baby, I mean. ;-)
